A Transformative Educational Journey: Insights from Tokyo, Japan
Date of Visit: 17 March and 18 March 2026
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Education is constantly evolving, and at United School, meaningful progress begins with learning from the best in the world. Our Principal, Mr. Manoj Biswakarma, recently visited Tokyo, Japan and explored Hiroo Gakuen, Musashino University Junior & Senior High School, and the KUMON Office Tokyo, representing one of the very few schools in Nepal to have introduced the KUMON method for our students.
|
"KUMON is a globally recognized learning method focused on self-learning, step-by-step progression, and building strong foundational skills in Mathematics and Reading. It empowers students to develop discipline, critical thinking, and the ability to learn independently — skills that extend well beyond the classroom. We are proud to be among the very few schools in Nepal to have introduced the KUMON method, and our ultra-modern KUMON lab has been actively benefiting students for the past two years. Seeing a painting by one of our students displayed at the KUMON Office in Tokyo was a moment of immense pride, a true symbol of global recognition." |

Purpose of the Visit
The primary objective of this visit was to understand the Japanese model of secondary education, particularly focusing on:
- Innovative school management practices
- Modern teaching methodologies
- Integration of global education
- Effective use of digital learning tools

A Glimpse into the Schools
Both institutions operate as private co-educational schools offering a six-year continuous program, seamlessly blending junior and senior high education. With a combined student population of approximately 1,600, these schools exemplify a balance between tradition and innovation.
Notably, Hiroo Gakuen’s transition from a girls’ school (established in 1918) to a co-educational institution in 2007 reflects a bold vision for modernization and global relevance.
Key Observations
1. Teaching and Learning Approach
Classrooms were vibrant, interactive, and student-centered. Rather than passive learning, students actively engaged in discussions, asked questions, and collaborated on problem-solving tasks. This inquiry-based approach nurtures:
- Critical thinking
- Communication skills
- Confidence in expressing ideas
2. Seamless Integration of Digital Learning
Technology was not an add-on—it was embedded into daily learning. Students used tablets and digital platforms to:
- Access resources
- Complete assignments
- Collaborate with peers
This integration enabled personalized learning and significantly enhanced student engagement.
3. Strong Focus on Science and Research
A standout feature was the emphasis on scientific inquiry. With well-equipped laboratories and structured research opportunities, students:
- Conduct independent and group research
- Present findings
- Apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios
This approach fosters both academic excellence and practical skills.
4. Global Education and International Outlook
Both schools demonstrated a clear commitment to global education. Their programs included:
- English-medium instruction
- International collaborations
- Preparation for overseas universities
Students are not only academically prepared but also globally aware and culturally adaptable.
5. Visionary School Management
The transformation of Hiroo Gakuen into a globally focused institution highlights the importance of strong leadership and strategic planning. The schools are agile, continuously adapting to:
- Emerging educational trends
- Technological advancements
- Global demands
A Proud Milestone: Strengthening Our Own Educational Journey
Alongside school visits, I had the privilege of visiting the KUMON Office Tokyo and KUMON Center Tokyo.
This visit was particularly meaningful as our school is among the few in Nepal to have implemented the KUMON Method to enhance students’ mathematical abilities.
The experience provided deeper insights into:
- KUMON’s philosophy of self-learning
- Step-by-step progression
- Building independence and discipline
We are proud to already host an ultra-modern KUMON lab within our school, where students have been actively benefiting for the past two years.
A particularly heartwarming moment was seeing a painting by one of our students displayed at the KUMON Office in Tokyo—an inspiring symbol of global recognition and student achievement.
Conclusion
This visit highlighted a progressive and holistic model of education—one that successfully integrates:
- Academic rigor
- Technological innovation
- Global readiness
The emphasis on inquiry-based learning, digital tools, and international exposure equips students with essential 21st-century skills.
The Way Forward
Inspired by these insights, we aim to further strengthen our own educational practices by:
- Expanding inquiry-based and student-centered teaching approaches
- Enhancing the use of digital learning tools
- Strengthening science and research opportunities
- Developing international education programs and partnerships
